STOP! Screaming!. Daddy AF Written and performed by Catherine Slater (aka Slayyter). I just watched one of the best films of the year. The Athens Film Festival is underway, and we were lucky enough to catch Anora at the opening ceremony.
And let me tell you, this movie absolutely kills me
From the very first scene, you’re glued to the screen, and that feeling doesn’t let up. As the movie went on, I kept thinking, “Come on, she’s got to slow down at some point, right? Give her a breather.” No, there’s no break, no crash, not even a hint of slowdown. Anora has some of the best pacing I’ve ever seen in a movie. Anora, a sex worker and tough Brooklyn girl, meets the son of a Russian oligarch and, in a whirlwind of madness, marries him.
He’s the most fun I’ve seen in a long time
But her fairy tale quickly turns into a nightmare when word gets out to Russia and her parents do everything they can to have their marriage annulled. The lead actor, Mikey Madison, who plays Anora, is an absolute revelation. She effortlessly combines sexiness, femininity, childlike innocence, and toughness in a way that leaves you speechless. It will go very, very far, and don’t be surprised to see it nominated for an Oscar. Personally, I’d also give the Best Supporting Actor nomination to Mark Eidelshtein, who plays the Russian boy.
It’s a realistic, violent, raw, funny, and ultimately sweet, modern Cinderella story
Fantastic. Anora is a slap in the face to the traditional fairy tale concept. Only in the real world, no prince will come and save you – you have to pick up the pieces and hold your head up high.
